8th Grade:
Class did a close reading of a quote from John Milton's Paradise Lost which discussed gratitude. Students wrote down the selection and discussed what they understood. They reread the piece in partnerships finding words that Milton related to gratitude. Then we read as a class and discussed the format of the poem. The class discussed gratitude and whether, according to the selection, it is a burden or not. Students then rewrote the piece so that it would be understood in our language today.
7th Grade:
In partnerships, students began working on their five paragraph essay responding to the following question: How did Langston Hughes' background influence his writing of the poem "Harlem"? Students began by writing their thesis which was approved by me. They then started on the essay.
